“With gratitude and love” by Elka Rouskov

Time flies. Unbelievably fast! When I think about it, it has been a whole year since Mary Sherhart had the wonderful idea about the project “Songs of Our Families.” A lot of good things happened during the last 12 months that were connected with this project. A lot of songs were sung. I still remember how excited I was last summer, when I talked with people near and far, relatives, cousins, acquaintances, and tried to make them remember some forgotten songs or traditions from my part of the country – the beautiful town of Vidin – proudly situated on the Danube River. My town Vidin – with the scent of thyme in the summer and linden in the fall; with its fertile dark soil producing golden wheat, juicy fruits and vegetables… This small corner of the world, even though forgotten by many, is rich in traditions and festivals, celebrated and practiced to this day.

While studying the traditional songs of my hometown, I learned a lot about myself. I remembered that I left Vidin while still very young. I’ve lived in Seattle for more than 20 years now, a second-generation immigrant from my family. My grandfather settled in the US more than 50 years ago and now is part of the group of people who work for the preservation of Bulgarian folklore in the Pittsburgh area. I was fortunate enough to find a nice Bulgarian community in the US, particularly among the members of the choir “Bulgarian Voices in Seattle.”  The choir was founded and is directed by Mary Sherhart who puts an endless amount of effort and energy into it. The choir has been getting together for practice regularly during the last three years. It consists of about thirty members, all women born in Bulgaria, who are united by their love for Bulgaria and Bulgarian folk songs. This was the driving force behind our work last year and I am thrilled that we were able to share our love of songs and traditions with the public in Seattle. Due again to Mary Sherhart’s help we were able to produce the choir’s first CD, with Penka Encheva as a soloist….or “Baba Penka”. This is the “baba” that we talk about in our project. And not only her, but many others like her, not only grandmothers, but all immigrants – like my grandfather, like me and my son… America is a land where people from many generations and all parts of Bulgaria come to start a new life. And every and each one of us carries his own song in his heart: from mother, father and Bulgaria…

These are the songs that we focused on in our project and the high point was the concert on May 10 and the premiere of the documentary “Tazi Baba” (This Grandmother), filmed by the talented Bogdan Darev. Both the concert and movie were received with a great amount of sentiments by the Seattle audience, and not only by the Bulgarians in the audience, but by people of various nationalities. In my opinion, this turned out to be much more than a regular concert, it became an event that was bigger and more important. Each and every woman from the choir contributed with parts of her own folklore background and emotions. They all demonstrated a lot of pride and love for the homeland on the stage. I will always remember the moment when I saw the audience picking up on these emotions.

Yes, the concert is behind us now, but time does not make the gratitude I feel toward the project fade away. On the contrary, I am even more grateful to each singer, each grandma, mother and relative in Bulgaria who, together or separately, gave us a song that was performed during the concert or one that became part of the choir’s repertoire.

I would like to thank from the bottom of my heart all the volunteers who helped with the project – and to all the donors from around the world; to the Bulgarian Cultural and Heritage Center in Seattle for their help with the organization and their financial support; to Mary Sherhart, who was able with lots of love and care to work with this non-professional group of singers and to inspire enough confidence in them to perform on the stage, and who gave them enough courage this year to sing their personal song – the traditional song, the song that we will leave behind.

If you would like to listen to these songs and to sing your songs with us, please come to the “megdan” (gathering place) in Seattle. We are waiting for you!
