MEDENA PITKA (Honey Bread) is a program of The Bulgarian Cultural and Heritage Center of Seattle that organically interweaves knowledge of traditional Bulgarian rituals and celebrations and practical knowledge of Bulgarian proverbial lyrics, rhythms, songs and dance. It introduces children to our traditional folklore in a way in which students learn by doing. Learning about symmetrical and asymmetrical meters means involvement of children in rhythmic practices (verbally, vocally and bodily). Hearing about ancient traditional rituals means not only listening to stories about their origin but also memorizing songs and dances related to these rituals through movements.

In the process of age-appropriate songs/proverbs-learning, children explore the richness of Bulgarian language. Adopting a language by singing is the most powerful way of absorbing both melody and language. Moreover, all songs are related to traditional dance steps and movements. This builds an entity of knowledge of both mind and body and penetrates deeply in young learners’ selves.

A large part of each class is devoted to building dance movement skills. For the very young students this includes children’s games that introduce via singing (in Bulgarian) concepts (terms) of right and left, forward and back, down and up. Children learn how to recognize and stay in rhythm, how to move in a line along with others, etc. The teaching material is assigned to each age group and gradually introduces the main popular Bulgarian dances (along with stories about their origin). It also includes regional dance patterns from the fieldwork of the instructor. The steps to be learned may be also artistically choreographed and presented by involving dramaturgical elements when preparing performances.

MEDENA PITKA Bulgarian heritage cultural program has an educational purpose. Simultaneously, because of its combined music and dance foundation, it is a program that is also oriented toward performances that are open to the Bulgarian community and guests. These will be thematically grouped around Christmas, spring rituals preceding Easter, and Slavic Literacy and Culture Day, May 24.

The overall aim of the program is to stimulate children’s growth by providing a cultural environment where they will learn to sing in Bulgarian, dance the Bulgarian way, laugh to Bulgarian jokes and, hopefully, create their own folklore. It is the instructor’s hope that what is to be learned over the year will become part of the cultural knowledge that belongs to what we may call “ineradicable.”
