The Songs of Sakar by Katya Prodanova

SakarMtn

When I came back from Bulgaria this summer, I brought a little treasure with me – a recording of folk songs from the region where my family is from – the beautiful Sakar mountain. My aunt sang two songs for me, and I was able to record them and include the them in our project “The Songs of Our Families”. The first song that she sang is popular in the Sakar region, but it could be heard in other regions of Bulgaria as well. The second song is a “family” song. It is a song that has been passed in my family, from generation to generation, from mothers to daughters. It is very likely that this song tells the story of a distant relative of mine.

While I was growing up, my mother didn’t sing very often, but when she did, she would sing songs mostly from the Sakar region. She would tell me that our songs, the Sakar songs, are sung mostly without an accompaniment. My mother would sing for the most important Christian holidays like Christmas, Easter, and definitely for Palm Sunday. She would also tell me stories about the songs, and I remember that they all depicted the traditions and everyday life of the Sakar village. The vivid stories and the beautiful songs created a colorful memory in my mind and that memory always brings me back to that time. With these songs and stories my mother was trying to make me feel a part of the musical folk tradition of Sakar mountain, and she succeeded. This is was her little victory over the widespread neglect of family values and Bulgarian traditions. Later, it became mine too.

A while back, my aunt helped me obtain a book – “A Collection – Songs and Melodies from Sakar” – 1700 music gems that withstood the test of time. It is amazing how such a small and secluded mountainous region can give birth to so many musical pieces.

This year, I brought with me two gems from the treasure chest of Sakar – two songs that I would love to share with you.
